Our Community Youth Volunteer Program helps teach young participants equine-related skills

Pegasus Program

Call (207)729-0168 for Information on start dates for our Summer Sessions

The Pegasus Program was developed in response to requests from the surrounding communities by enthusiastic teens who are active volunteers at Flying Changes. With assistance from a staff mentor, these motivated young people designed the program criteria, developed a budget, wrote the successful grant, and trained to become the first Pegasus instructors.

This innovative program has two primary goals:

1. to teach young participants the equine-related skills that will enable them to productively volunteer either with disabled riders or as caretakers of therapy horses in the Flying Changes program. See our photos as we learn to lead a horse.
2. to help them develop a new awareness of the diverse needs and capabilities of disabled individuals to take back with them into home, school, and community.

A maximum number of 15 youngsters may participate any one time, with recognition planned for younger children who achieve age appropriate skills as well as a "graduation" of skilled older youth into the adult volunteer program. An awards celebration will be held on the 8th session. Interested youngsters may train to become the next generation of Pegasus instructors.

This is what we expect from our participants:

  • a commitment to the program, given that the number of slots for participants is limited and there is a waiting list.
  • a phone call at least a day in advance to let us know if you cannot make a session.
  • willingness to learn and then apply skills to practical tasks in the barn.

For information regarding registration, programs for the disabled, or a variety of volunteer opportunities, please call the Center at (207)729-0168 or e-mail us.
